Now in its second year, the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music is proud to present the Summer Jazz Intensive Superstar Concert: Ken Lister, Christine Jensen, Ingrid Jensen and Joel Miller and guests belong to an elite class of internationally renowned Canadian musicians and composers and share a deep connection to central Vancouver Island.

Ingrid Jensen is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music and Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo, British Columbia. Ingrid is a native of Cedar and now resides in Montreal and New York. She has been nominated for several Juno awards, winning one with her first release, Vernal Fields (featuring Lenny White, George Garzone and Larry Grenadier). Ingrid spends much of her time touring with her own projects, playing with the Grammy award winning Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra and guesting at prestigious universities around the world.

Christine Jensen, also a native of Cedar who now resides in Montreal, is excited to work with Nanaimo’s next generation of jazz musicians, “I’m really happy that we’re able to do the jazz camp and concert again in Nanaimo, and I’m thrilled to be working with Ken Lister, Joel Miller and my sister Ingrid,” Jensen said. “I am also grateful that Nanaimo Conservatory of Music is hosting the event for the second year. We would really like to make this an annual event.” She has been described as “an original voice on the international jazz scene…and one of Canada’s most compelling composers,“ by Mark Miller of the Globe and Mail.

Ken Lister, lives in Qualicum Beach, and is an established bandleader and session player who has helped make a name for Vancouver Island on the international jazz scene. Ken Lister has been a professional jazz bassist since 1983, winning accolades and Juno awards along the way. He currently performs and teaches in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island and has toured across Canada and internationally to Australia, the British Isles, Cuba and South America. Joel Miller, who hails from Montreal, is a multi-award winning musician and composer whose connection to the Island comes from his partnership with Christine Jensen. He was awarded the coveted Grand Prix Jazz Award at the 1997 Montreal International Jazz Festival. The saxophonist's recording career spans 15 years beginning with his debut album, Find a Way (1996). Miller recently released his critically acclaimed album Swim (Origin Records), featuring Geoffrey Keezer, Greg Ritchie and Fraiser Hollins.

Drummer Hans Verhoeven is originally from British Columbia. Hans has lived and worked in some of the most vibrant music scenes in Canada and abroad. Recognized for his authenticity, playfulness, and creativity, he has performed with a wide array of artists from Oscar Stagnaro, PJ Perry and Joel Miller, to Brandi Disterheft, Teddy Kumpel and the Be Good Tanyas. Hans holds a Bachelor of Music from McGill University where he studied with Chris McCann.
Come enjoy an evening of stellar jazz not to be missed.
