Conservatory Students to Represent Vancouver Island at the BC Performing Arts Festival

Nanaimo Conservatory Students to Represent Vancouver Island at the Performing Arts BC Festival in Penticton June 3-7, 2014

Nanaimo Conservatory of Music Students will be in great numbers at the BC Provincial Music Festival this year. Six NCM students and two alternates have been chosen. Lilu Scott and alternate Akela Szasz, students of NCM’s voice instructor, Christine McMahon, impressed judges at the Upper Island Music Festival with their duet from Hansel and Gretel. Jasmine Mather, a student of Karl Rainer, who plans to further her music studies at university this fall, will perform Vivaldi’s Summer on the violin at the Penticton event. Max Segriff, also a student of NCM violin instructor and Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra Director Karl Rainer, who competed in the North Island Festival, will be performing the Vivaldi Concerto in A minor and Souvenir de Sarasate by Potstock. James Mark’s violin student, Madeline Erickson who, like Max, is from the North Island, has also been chosen to perform at the Provincials, as they are commonly known. Guitar student Alex Kolodinsky, who has studied with Patrick Olmsted for many years, was thrilled to have been chosen to perform, and Uei-Young Jung, a Suzuki flute student of Cindy Speelman will perform the Telemann Suite in A minor. Serena Jack, student of Calvin Dyck (Concert Master for the Vancouver Island Symphony), will be an alternate in the violin category. Finally, the NCM’s highly successful and many-time Provincial winner, the Nanaimo Youth Choir has made the cut again!

Even though this event is in Penticton, which might be far for some, you can hear some of these students perform at the Festival of Recitals on May 31st at the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music. The event starts at 10AM and runs through to 5:00PM with performances throughout the day. Admission is free!
The Nanaimo Conservatory of Music has been offering music lessons in Nanaimo for over 35 years and their students regularly achieve high marks in festivals and in their Royal Conservatory of Music exams.
