Chordial Notes - February 2016

February 2016 Notes
Kerilie McDowall NCM

February 14th has always been a very busy time with fun and happy romantic musical celebrations for Valentine’s Day. It’s the time of year when musicians are actively supporting partnerships and marriages during their performances, concerts and dances that celebrate love and Valentine’s Day.

Music can never be excluded when it comes to the topic of love. There are thousands of moving popular love songs and compositional works of art created in the spirit of love. Many of us have a favorite romantic song that brings us much true joy with a catchy melody that we like to share with a loved one. A Classical music program is never short of inspiration. From Chopin to Ravel and Rachmaninoff, the Classical world is romantic when it comes to the topic of love.

If you are a serious student of music you may want to choose a new favorite romantic piece to perform for the month of February for adding to your repertoire, all the while working on developing a thirty minute to three hour programme of pieces to perform for your future concerts and performances.

Ask your Nanaimo Conservatory of Music instructor how you can start building your repertoire and soon in no time you will have a set list dedicated for a romantic program for next February 2017. Audiences have always enjoyed an exceptional love song and will be appreciative, so it will be worth the effort and you will have a blast bringing some nostalgia and happy moments to your audience with your future performances.  Be sure to ask your Nanaimo of Conservatory of Music instructor about building upon your musical repertoire today.

A MESSAGE FROM MARILYN RUMMEL’S STUDIO ON THE MUSICIAN’S BODY CLASS- How can we be a full month gone in the New Year???  It's going to be exciting, but it's going to be fast. We began the musician's body class last week. I know that it is not a convenient time for most people, so I'm happy that some were able to make it. We'll see by the end if it has made a difference in people's playing, but we noticed one clearly by the end of the first class. Though the lessons are cumulative, you could still register if you've thought about it and didn't make it so far. The principal is that we do use our whole bodies to play, and so co-ordinating and understanding the whole self will help us to move the connecting parts with greater ease which leads to easier learning and more expressive playing.
