March 18-22, 2013 Nanaimo Conservatory of Music presents its first annual Spring Break Musical Theatre Workshop featuring renowned instructors Joëlle Rabu and Rick Scott
5 full days – at Nanaimo
Conservatory of Music, 375 Selby
Street, Nanaimo BC V9R 5L9
The Conservatory's Spring Break Musical Theatre Workshop is the perfect opportunity for aspiring young musical theatre artists to hone their craft and have fun while doing so. This unique program is designed for children ages 7 to 12, although keen learners who fall outside of that age group are also welcome to apply. Organized by Nanaimo Conservatory of Music, a nonprofit community music school since 1977, the workshop empowers children to sing, act, and command the stage with confidence. Led by international performing artist Joëlle Rabu and iconic children's performer Rick Scott, classes will concentrate on theatrical characterization, vocal technique, performance training, movement for the stage, teamwork, exploring creativity, and problem solving.
Given musical training, children have
been shown to perform better in their sports, schooling, and social lives. The
Spring Break Musical Theatre Workshop offers young performers the toolkit to
train their ears, speak in public with self-assurance, think inventively, and
perhaps even form the next cast of Glee!
With additional guidance and a musical repertoire provided by Canadian legend
Rick Scott, this camp is highly unique in its format. Rather than falling back
on the same bland standards usually marketed to children, Joëlle Rabu guides the class to fully
realize the depth and wide emotional range of Rick Scott's music, bringing a
welcome sense of maturity to an area of education plagued by clichés and
patronisation.
Fresh from a series of performances in Mexico,
Joëlle Rabu is an award-winning singer, actor, and writer for the stage.
For nearly three decades, Joëlle has
toured five continents to rave reviews and standing ovations for both her
concert of original songs and her stage play "Tonight: Piaf." A two-time
Jessie Award winner, Juno nominee and Touring Artist of the Year recipient, Joëlle
has performed in many theatrical productions (including Anything Goes, Marion Bridge, Irma la Douce, Cabaret, Hot Flashes, and
Murder on the Nile) and sung with numerous
symphony orchestras across Canada and the U.S. Acclaimed children's entertainer
Rick Scott is well loved around the world for his quirky and intelligent folk
music. Throughout his critically acclaimed, multiple decade career, he has been
honoured by the Canadian Folk Music Awards, Western Canadian Music Awards,
Parents’ Choice (USA), NAPPA Honors Awards (USA), and Canadian Book Centre Our
Choice Awards, among others.
Each
day will run from 10:00am to 4:00pm, although working parents may drop off as early
as 8:30am and pick up as late as 5:30pm. The final performance will be a musical
revue at Nanaimo Centre Stage on Friday, March 22nd at 2:00pm with admission by
donation. To register, or for more information, please call Kathleen at Nanaimo
Conservatory of Music - (250) 754 - 4611. Enrollment is limited.
