Summer is slowly coming to a close, but here’s to an extended season for a few more picnics, walks in the forest, and swims in the ocean as we approach the fall season and going back to school. There are some fun events to mark on your calendar! The Nanaimo Conservatory of Music’s yearly Open House is approaching fast on September 26th, 2015 read on to learn more! The Nanaimo Port Theatre’s September concert season has some great events and there is even a Baroque chamber ensemble concert with the fabulous Victoria Baroque Players!

The Nanaimo Conservatory of Music is getting ready for these exciting upcoming events and the busy upcoming fall season at our music school with music lessons, concert performances, recitals and more.  If you have not registered yet for your music lessons now is the time to sign up for the year and get set for the winter season for your studies, just inquire at the office and please join us at the Harvest Festival on September 12 and the Open House on September 26!

OPEN HOUSE 2015 FOR CULTURE DAYS
On September 26, 2015 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music is inviting everyone in Nanaimo to an afternoon of wonderful musical discovery at our annual Open House during Culture Days 2015. “We are so excited to share our space during the national Culture Days celebration,” said Kathleen Darby, Executive Director. “Every year we have so much fun, and we are sure 2015 will be no exception!”

The Nanaimo community is welcome to try out a musical instrument in the petting zoo hosted by Tom Lee Music and to join the Conservatory’s very experienced faculty for some mini music lessons. During the Open House there will be performances, demonstrations, prizes and refreshments. This is a chance for you to check out musical instruments that interest you that you might want to play, or just to relax and listen to some great music.

The Nanaimo Conservatory of Music is a not-for-profit charitable community music school that teaches music to all ages from babies, toddlers, children, teens and adults to seniors in both private individual and group lessons. All levels of experience are welcome from complete beginners to advanced.  We offer wonderful Kindermusik lessons, the well-known Suzuki method, clinics, musical theatre, choir, festivals, concerts, the new jazz combo program, a summer jazz camp and much more. Scholarships and bursaries are available. Instruments include voice, guitar, harp, violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, piano, saxophone and trombone. Other more uncommon instruments taught at the Nanaimo Conservatory include the orchestral instruments such as the oboe, bassoon and French horn and much more. The Nanaimo Conservatory of Music offers instruction to the serious music student as well as to the student looking for an enjoyable hobby as taught by top instructors.

BRAND NEW NCM PROGRAMS THROUGH THE CITY OF NANAIMO!
For your convenience the City of Nanaimo is now offering numerous Nanaimo Conservatory of Music lesson programs! The programs that are available now through the City of Nanaimo are Kindermusik ( 1-5 years) Pajama Class,  Headstart Suzuki classes (3-5 years), lessons in introductory harp (beginners), ukulele (beginners), voice (all ages) ,violin (ages 11-14 years), musical theatre (ages 11-14 years) and group flute (ages 12-16 years). Be sure to take advantage of the City of Nanaimo numerous program schedules and sign up for the year and register online at the website www.IReg.nanaimo.ca! All lessons will be held at 375 Selby Street.
NEW PROGRAM: JAZZ COMBO STUDIES WITH JUNO WINNING BASSIST KEN LISTER!!
Here is some exciting news for jazz fans!! Ken Lister will be instructing the new jazz combo program for students of all levels. Explore and develop new skills with an introduction to jazz playing, jazz styles, jazz improvisation, theory, college and university preparation and exploring the jazz repertoire. Instructor Ken Lister is a multi JUNO winning bassist (Phil Dwyer Orchestra, Hugh Fraser) and is a first call BC bassist. Ken’s extensive experience will help develop your skills while having fun and learning about the 98 year old tradition of jazz improvisation! Classes start September 25th and will continue to June 3rd on Fridays from 5:00-6:00 pm. WELCOME TO JOAN BLACKMAN, NEW NCM VIOLIN INSTRUCTOR ON FACULTY!
Joan Blackman, Associate Concertmaster of the Vancouver Symphony is a highly gifted and acclaimed North American violinist. Blackman has performed and recorded as soloist with Vancouver Symphony, Victoria Symphony, CBC Radio Orchestra, and the Banff Festival Orchestra.
“First rate soloist”, “a ravishing tone”," "exchanged lines meltingly in a flawless performance," "shapelier phrases and sweeter tone would be hard to imagine," "playing with lyricism, precision, and evident joy;" are just a few of the numerous accolades that critics have raved about upon listening to Joan's violin performances. Zach Carstensen of Seattle's Gathering Note wrote "Your heart would need to be made of stone not to have loved Joan Blackman's splendid solo."                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  
As Artistic Director of the Vetta Chamber Music and Recital Society, Joan Blackman programs and performs with the best top BC talent along with exceptional invited visting guests. Blackman is a member of the renowned American String Project, which brings together concertmasters and soloists throughout North America. We would like to welcome Joan to our Nanaimo Conservatory of Music faculty and are very excited to have her along as our newest violin instructor. Welcome Joan!


AWESOME JAZZ SUPER STAR CONCERT AT SIMON HOLT RESTAURANT!
The July 22nd faculty super star jazz performance with Ingrid and Christine Jensen, Ken Lister, Joel Miller and Jon Wikan was a tremendous success. The faculty concert was phenomenal and they performed many of JUNO winning composer Christine Jensen’s popular jazz compositions and additional compositions of Ingrid’s and Joel’s. The performances made for an entertaining, engaging and enjoyable evening. The July 23rd student performances at Simon Holt featured a ton of upcoming young talent! These young students will be North America’s future talented musicians.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  
NEW OPERA WORKSHOPS COMING TO YOU VERY SOON!
Register now for our exceptional Opera Workshop with Director Carol Fetherston and Assistant Director Mary Jackson. Classes will be held on Saturdays from 3-6 pm. Register for 10 Fall Sessions at only $20 per class for $200.00. The winter workshop is 12 sessions at $240.00. Hope to see you there!

A WONDERFUL NEW KAWAI PIANO!
The Nanaimo Conservatory of Music would like to thank the generous donors of a new exquisite Kawai piano in Studio 8. So many students will benefit from and enjoy this generous donation. A NEW LOOK FOR THE NANAIMO CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC
You may have noticed the painting equipment at the Nanaimo Conservatory during your recent visit! We are painting all of the music studios and interior and exterior walls with non-toxic paint for a wonderfully fresh appearance! It looks beautiful!

MUSIC LESSON REGISTRATION FOR THE UPCOMING YEAR
If you are registering for the year for music lessons please make arrangements to pay for them in advance at the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music office. It is required that all students are registered before taking lessons. Registration forms need to be filled out along with a deposit and a registration fee paid up front before taking music lessons.  A discount of 2% is available if you pay for the year in full. KINDERMUSIK AT THE NANAIMO CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC
Classes for children from birth to five years are available now on Tuesdays 2:00 pm and Wednesdays at 10:00 am. The City of Nanaimo PJ Class takes place Thursday at 5:30 pm. CALL FOR ISLAND BEL CANTO CHOIR SINGERS
If you love to sing and have fun, now is your chance to join Island Bel Canto Singers, an   established Nanaimo women’s community choir.
