SILENT NIGHT – NOT REALLY, AT THE NANAIMO CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC
‘Tis the season, and before long, your schedule will likely fill with carolling, festive concerts, and end-of-year parties. Such are the joys of an active musical education! But before you get too caught up in the baked goods or lost in a never-ending cycle of cheesy Christmas albums, please take a moment to acquaint yourself with our fabulously packed roster of events, including musical appearances by faculty and students in the community, who would love to have your support. Additionally, this newsletter is also full of important information about registrations, auditions, lesson cancellations, and a special members-only opportunity to buy advance tickets for the Jane Coop solo piano concert at the Port.

While you’re reading, consider what the Conservatory means to you, your family, and the Central Island region. As a not-for profit organization, we rely on working together to keep the magic of music alive in our community: you couldn’t ask for a truer example of holiday spirit. At the age of nineteen , Jane Coop won First Prize in the CBC’s national radio competition and prizes at New York’s Kosziusko Foundation Competition and the Washington International Competition. Recital debuts at Wigmore Hall and Carnegie Recital Hall and performances with the Toronto Symphony, the Calgary Philharmonic the Victoria Symphony and the CBC Vancouver Orchestra were followed by a tour as soloist wit h the National Arts Centre Orchestra of Canada .

Subsequently she has played in over twenty countries and been a jury member for the Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards, the Glenn Gould Prize, the Hnatyshyn Foundation Developing Artists Grants and various Canada Council grant awards.

Three of her many critically successful recordings have earned Juno nominations and in 2012, Jane Coop was appointed to the Order of Canada . Call 250-754-4611 for special NCM member ticket pricing of just $15!

The Yellowpoint Christmas Spectacular! is a celebration of Christmas and an extravaganza of music and dance, lights and decorations, laughter and tears with a cast of 14 professional singers, dancers and musicians. Canadian singer-songwriter-actor Joëlle Rabu returns to the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music to lead the Spring Break Musical Theatre Workshop from March 17 - 21. These fun filled and educational sessions will focus on developing vocal and performance techniques for the popular musical theatre genre, culminating with a public performance on the last day. Aimed at sharpening awareness required when delivering a well-rounded performance (singing, character portrayal and movement), participants will be focusing on harmonies, creating character roles, crafting vocal characterizations, connecting the voice, body and mind, and incorporating movement. With Joëlle’s musical son Nico as special guest, this camp is sure to be a highlight for your budding musical theatre star!

WINTER HARP
December 14 - Lori Pappajohn's Winter Harp is on its way - a sure sign of the coming Christmas season. It is going to be another beautiful show this year, with guests Kim Robertson and Roger Helfrick. The Vancouver Island Youth Harp ensemble, which includes many Conservatory students, will be playing in the lobby before the 3:30 PM show at the Port Theatre.

SING WITH THE SYMPHONY

WELCOME BACK
It’s our 35th birthday this year and we couldn’t be more proud! Exciting new projects like the
Spring Break Musical Theatre Camp and our Summer Jazz Intensive are taking off in a big way,
while we still offer the same excellent standard of private instruction that made us special back
in ’77.

Vancouver Island Chamber Music Festival is one development that we’re particularly pleased to
see take off. NCM members may recall that we originally scheduled the festival for February. Unfortunately, one of the major acts pulled out late in the day. At the question of cancellation or continuing along with a reduced line-up, we elected to postpone. Things have a funny way of working out, and our later autumn date opened new doors: in addition to securing acclaimed early music ensemble iSacabuche! as our headliners, we are also thrilled to welcome Kristin Hoff, a young mezzo-soprano whose career has already seen her perform at Carnegie Hall, with the Boston Pops, and in a host of other high-profile gigs across North America.

These artists, together with a fantastic roster of NCM faculty and friends, are a must-see for every Conservatory student. Taking place November 1st and 2nd, weekend passes cost $40 to the general public and just $30 for NCM members. 2013 VANCOUVER ISLAND CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL
The festival takes place Friday, November 1st at 7pm in St. Andrew’s United Church and Saturday, November 2nd at 2pm (matinee) and 7pm (evening) in St. Paul’s Anglican Church. NEW FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: DICK SMITH, JAZZ PIANO
Dick Smith’s first love was Chopin, but his taste for classical music quickly developed to encompass a broader range of styles and eras, especially jazz. After a first gig with his school band teacher that paid about $10, there was no going back. Sick of half-heartedly working for the government while picking up gigs after hours, Dick made his way east to study music at the world-famous Berklee College of Music in Boston, starting a career that would also take him to Toronto and Halifax.

NCM: Who was your best teacher?
DS: A lot of the leaning I did was on the bandstand and as an autodidact. You could say
my parents tried to teach me; that is, they told me to “get a real job!”
NCM: If that sounds familiar to any of our students here at the Conservatory, do you have
any thoughts or advice to share?
DS: I always incorporate parents’ input and treat their opinion with respect and
understanding, but at the same time, my first goal is that students approach music in all its
forms with both positivity and an open mind.
NCM: Throughout your career, does a favourite gig spring to mind?
DS: Actually, my best gigs are now! Gabriola Island, my new home, has some amazing
musicians and although I’ve played with a lot of great people through the years, I think the
most fun I’ve ever had was just two weeks ago. Toronto was a nice place to live but I didn’t
feel at home with the music scene there.
NCM: Any must-have albums, or something you’ve done some heavy listening to lately?
DS: J.S. Bach’s Partitas, Preludes & Fugues by Glenn Gould; Oedipus Rex by Igor
Stravinsky; Miles Davis’ work with Gil Evans; and Charlie Parker’s Verve recordings.

THEORY AND MUSICIANSHIP
Did you know that RCM theory is required in order to qualify for high school music lesson credit and for ARTC designation? If you’d like to register for rudiments or harmony, contact Teresa Borek for scheduling at 250-756-2222. Tuition is $600. Teens who would like to earn credit for high school should sign up for “Rapid Rudiments,” with Anne Tanod for $750. This course covers all levels of theory and takes place Wednesdays, 6:45-8:15pm. Those who don’t plan on sitting a formal exam can still explore how music works in a fun, hands-on setting with Marilyn Rummel’s musicianship courses.

Congratulations to all exam students! Both Lilu Scott and Akela Szasz received First Class Honours with Distinction in their June Gr. 4 RCM Voice exams with the same mark of 93%. Elizabeth Herman was awarded First Class Honours in her Gr. 10 Voice RCM Exam in August. Elizabeth will be performing in the chorus of Vancouver Island Opera's production of 'Hansel and Gretel ' at Knox United Church, Parksville on Sat. Oct. 5 at 7:30 pm, and Sunday, Oct. 6 at 2:30 pm. conservatory Students Triumph at the  Upper Island Music Festival
Working hard to develop their skills is what helps our students shine at the Upper Island Music Festival every year, and this year is particularly shiny! The following students played beautifully at the UIMF Honours Concert at St. Andrews Church on Sunday April 14: Clif Clemotte and Chloë Harbattle, violin students of Karl Rainer; Uei-Young Jung, flute student of Cindy Speelman; Lilu Scott and Akela Szasz as well as Britanny Hannah, voice students of Christine McMahon; and the Nanaimo Youth Choir directed by Marian Smith.  Pippa Williams, piano and oboe instructor at NCM, attended the concert (and accompanied students) said "I was super impressed with the level of these students. They were fantastic!"

SUMMER JAZZ INTENSIVE IS BACK!!

AUGUST 20-23, 2013

Thanks to the enormous success of our first inaugural Summer Jazz Intensive, we are pleased to announce that we will continue the program this August.  Led by Juno award-winning musician and composer Christine Jensen, a top notch faculty of professional jazz musicians will guide beginner to intermediate-advanced students through the ropes of improvisation, instrumental techniques, ensemble playing, and more. Stay tuned for details, including more about the Jazz Superstar concert.

INSIDE YOUR STUDIO!

·         Cindy Speelman - flute, recorder: Congratulations to all the flute students who performed beautifully at the Upper Island Music Festival - Uei-Young Jung, Ryley Hounsome, Andrea Stachow, Jake McDermid and Ella Hannesson. Congratulations to Marion Drage who completed her Grade 3 flute exam in January.

·         Christine McMahon - voice: Christine McMahon is proud of voice students Brittany Hannah, Elizabeth Herman, Lilu Scott and Akela Szasz for their prizewinning work in the Music Festival. Brittany was chosen as Provincial Rep. (Senior Division) for the fourth year in a row, and performed in the Honours Concert at St. Andrew's United on April 14th.  In the Adult Open Division, Elizabeth Herman received four Gold medals and one Silver.  The adjudicator, Kevin Zakresky, was so enchanted with the 'Letter Duet' of Elizabeth and Brittany from The Marriage of Figaro that he requested an encore performance, and the singers repeated the entire scene, much to the delight of the audience!

·         Teresa Borek - piano: Congratulations to Laura Stachow who performed in the Upper Island Music Festival in March and received 1st place in Post-Romantic class and 1st place in Concert Group class.

·         Marian Smith - Nanaimo Youth Choir: The Nanaimo Youth Choir opened the Honours Concert of the Upper Island Music Festival on April 14th by leading the singing of O Canada. Following they performed their repertoire that they received a mark of 95 for during the festival competition in March. They were recommended to the Provincial festival as representatives from the local festival. The NYC have been first place winners at the Provincials for the last three years. On April 17th both the Concert choir and the Junior choir presented a concert at the Port Theatre as part of the Schools on Stage program sponsored by the Port Theatre and Island Savings. The audience consisted of 760 school children and the remainder of the seats were filled with adults. The choristers consider this to be one of the highlights in their singing season!

·         Marilyn Rummel - harp: High excitement in the NC harpworld this month. First Hayley Farenholtz - gr. 6 - and Kaleigh Stroink - Gr. 8 - were awarded Gold Medals by the RCM for their excellent exams last spring. (photo on Facebook) Both of them, along with other members of the NC harp ensemble will be travelling to Vancouver next week to participate in the Vancouver Kiwannis Music Festival harp classes. Our first road trip! And on a sad note we mark the passing of Rella Meston, who was enthusiastic member of the adult harp ensemble. Rella was also an administrator of the Nanaimo Conservatory in its early days. Her memorial service will be help Sat. April 27, and Marilyn Rummel and the adult group will play harps in her memory there.

MUSICAL THEATRE

Our Spring Break Musical Theatre Worshop with Joëlle Rabu and Rick Scott was incredible and much fun was had by all! Students worked all week at the Conservatory on music written by Rick, which Joëlle created wonderful choreography and staging for. Even the shy students seemed to have a great time. The performance at Nanaimo Centre Stage was superb. Check out our Facebook page for lots of great pictures!

JABLONSKI SOLO PIANO CONCERT

The Krzysztof Jablonski concert has been celebrated as one of the best concerts in Nanaimo in many, many years! Plus this fundraising concert raised over $6,000 for the Conservatory which has been a local not-for-profit charity for 35 years. Thank you to everyone who helped make this concert a smashing success. In addition, Mr. Jablonkski gave a wonderful master class to senior students from all over the area.

Conservatory Student and Faculty Events

Clif Clemotte, Jasmine Mather and Maddy Erickson will be playing a fundraising concert raising money to offset provincial trip expenses and summer music course tuition. The performance will take place on Friday May 10th at St. Pauls Anglican Church , 100 Chapel Street, at 7:30 PM. Sharon Wishart will be accompanying. Admission is by donation, tickets available at the door. Please cone hear some great music and support our student artists!

Soaring with the sound of birds and nature -  On Saturday, April 20, the Port Theatre will be filled to the rafters with the beauteous melodies of birds and nature in a fascinating blend of music that creates images of the natural life in the far north, birds in flight, and tranquil European pastures. And in the lobby – displays about birds.

Island Bel Canto Sings of Love and Nature

Island Bel Canto Singers will evoke the senses with song in their upcoming concert In the Garden, Songs of Love and Nature on May 5. The program takes gems from many genres. Down by the Salley Gardens is a traditional Irish song with words by poet William Butler Yeats. Eidelweiss by Rodgers and Hammerstein is a much-loved air from “The Sound of Music”.  Among the familiar pieces, there is also an unusual and hauntingly beautiful contemporary composition by young American composer Eric Whitacre – Five Hebrew Love Songs. CHORDIAL NOTES - MARCH 2013

NEW DIRECTIONS FOR THE CONSERVATORY
Nanaimo Conservatory of Music was originally conceived as the Central Vancouver Island Community Music School in 1977. Heilwig von Königslöw, a violin instructor and eager chair of the relatively young music department at Malaspina College, realized that there was no way for aspiring classical music students to access the kind of professional instruction they needed without having to go to Victoria or Vancouver. With a first year that included just 32 students and 6 part time faculty, the organization's impact was immediately and gratefully welcomed by its community. Now, with approximately 380 students and nearly as many faculty as our entire student body in the '70s, we are continuing to offer the Central Island region the best in quality music education and programming. Our Spring Break Musical Theatre Workshop is one example of our continuing innovation. With instructors Joelle Rabu, an internationally recognized and award-winning actor, singer, and writer, and Rick Scott, one of Canada's best loved children's entertainers, students will explore various aspects of performance, including characterization, vocal techniques, and movement for the stage. Transferable creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork skills are also addressed. With childcare available from 8:30am to 5:00pm, this is an excellent opportunity to learn and have fun during spring break. The camp runs every day from March 18, with a grand finale performance in the afternoon of the 22nd at Nanaimo Centre Stage. Thanks to the enormous success of our first inaugural Summer Jazz Intensive, we are pleased to announce that we will continue the program this August. Led by Juno award-winning musician and composer Christine Jensen, a top notch faculty of professional jazz musicians will guide beginner to intermediate-advanced students through the ropes of improvisation, instrumental techniques, ensemble playing, and more. We are now in the planning stages for the Festival of Recitals. This event is also going to be our 35th birthday bash! Students, please make sure you save the date of June 2nd, 2013. The day starts at 10:00am and will run until 5:30pm. Information packages will be made available from your instructors very soon.

CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL POSTPONED
Due to funding and scheduling conflicts, we have decided to postpone the Vancouver Island Chamber Music Festival to November. Luckily, this means we have extra time to plan and build a bigger and even better festival – including headlining act ¡Sacabuche!

NEW FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: KATRINA RUSSELL, BASSOON
After obtaining her Bachelor of Music degree in performance from the University of Victoria, further studies took Katrina to Toronto, Banff, and Boston, Massachusetts, where she attended the New England Conservatory of Music. There she pursued her interest in the Baroque bassoon, and was granted a graduate diploma in historical performance with distinction. Having spent nearly two decades in London, England, where she played and recorded with the King’s Consort, the Hanover Band, L’Orchestre de la Champs Elysees, and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, among many other ensembles, Katrina has returned to Canada and now performs with the Pacific Baroque Orchestra.
Favourite food: as a committed lover of most food and drink, I feel the only answer to this one is something rather frivolous, so I'll have to say "Champagne and Strawberries", perhaps with a little dark chocolate on the side!
Favourite non-bassoon instrument: given that my husband is a horn player and maker, I think in the interests of marital harmony I have to say "French Horn". Also, I can honestly say that (for better or worse) I know far more about French horns than any other instrument (bassoon excepted, of course).
Strangest gig: the Knowledge Network recently broadcast a repeat of a program I was involved in a number of years ago that definitely qualifies as my strangest gig. I was booked to play with an orchestra called The English Concert in London, England, to dress in period Eighteenth century costume (complete with wigs, frills, etc.), to spend the day until 1:00am being towed up and down the River Thames on a barge whilst playing Handel's "Water Music" as part of a documentary about the first possible performance of that work. We were playing from copies of the original hand written parts, which were difficult to read a the best of times (sometimes the difference between ink splodges and notes are far from obvious), but once it became dark, all we had were candles on the edge of the music stands which kept blowing out in the wind. The fumes from the diesel engines of the tug boats were also blowing straight at us, making for a very strange juxtaposition of time and technology!

Marjorie Cullerne is pleased to announce that Serena Jack received First Place in the Concerto class, Own Choice class (grade 8), and the Folk Fiddle Solo class (14 years and under)!
Rhys Wong has won the Gold Medal for Preparatory Guitar! He'll be honoured at UBC's Chan Centre for Performing Arts, March 3rd. Congratulations to Rhys and teacher Patrick Olmsted!

As of this September, Nanaimo Conservatory of Music will have served the Central Island community as a nonprofit provider of the very best in musical instruction for 35 years. Expanding on our origin as the local classical music specialists, we now offer musical theatre, Kindermusik, and jazz camps. We also instruct in international instruments such as the Chinese pipa and Celtic harp. Through our annual gala solo piano concert and Vancouver Island Chamber Music Festival, we bring the world's best to our local theatres.

Music forms a vital part of who we are and what gives Central Vancouver Island its quality of life. Three and a half decades of service demonstrates our conviction that this is true and worth fighting for. As we reach this milestone, the City of Nanaimo has also come to the same conclusion. Recent municipally hosted events have included meetings with cultural sector leaders, public forums, and an online survey designed to gage public interest and priorities involving art and culture in the region. This is a critical time to support the Conservatory and make your voice heard about the importance of music and quality music instruction. THEORY CLASSES TO BEGIN IMMEDIATELY

Are you taking exams? Are you interested in the history of classical music? Ever caught yourself wondering, what's the use of knowing all the triads in a major scale, anyways? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, theory is for you. The class takes place Tuesdays, January 29th to May 7th at 6:30pm - 7:30pm. The cost is $300, with a $30 material fee for the textbook. The course is designed to finish in time for the Royal Conservatory rudiments exam in May.

WINTER RECITAL 

Students and faculty are now urged to sign up for our Winter Recital, taking place Saturday, January 26^th. A sign-up sheet has been posted and it's filling up quickly. There will be afternoon (3pm) and evening (7pm) performances with public admission by donation and a reception to follow. Led by renowned performing artist Joëlle Rabu, classes will concentrate on vocal technique, performance training, movement for the stage, teamwork, exploring creativity, and problem solving. Although the workshop is designed primarily for children ages 7 – 12 years, keen learners who fall outside of this group are welcome to apply. Each day will run from 10am to 4pm, although working parents may drop off as early as 8:30am and pick up as late as 5:30pm. The final performance will be a musical revue at Nanaimo Centre Stage!

The cost is $350 for the week, plus script fees. Partial bursaries may be available to current Conservatory students! For more information, please contact NCM at 250 754 4611.

NEW FACULTY SPOTLIGHT:  KEN LISTER, DOUBLEBASS

Ken Lister has been a professional jazz bassist since 1983. His performing career has taken him across Canada, Australia, the British Isles, Cuba, and South America. As a member of the Phil Dwyer Orchestra, Ken won a Juno Award for Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year in 2012, as well as the Juno Award for Best Mainstream Jazz Album of the Year in 1997 with the Hugh Fraser Quintet. Ken has performed with many great musicians, including Joshua Redman, Herb Ellis, Charlie Byrd, Ingrid Jensen, Misha Piatagorsky, Terrell Stafford, Slide Hampton, Kenny Wheeler, and Ernie Watts.

In addition to his recording and pedagogical work, Ken enjoys an active touring career. His upcoming engagements include performances in Portland, Seattle, Calgary, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Rochester, NY,  and Hartford, CT, as well as at the famous Smoke Jazz Club, in New York, NY, with many stops in between. He is a well loved instructor at Vancouver Island University and we are pleased to have him on board!

JOIN THE CHOIR FOR JUST $250

New Junior Choir students are invited to join the Nanaimo Youth Choir for the remainder of its season for just $250. We actively seek children ages 5 to 14 years old with little or no musical experience. With no audition necessary, its foremost purpose is to instill a love for music and singing, while imparting important fundamentals and basic technique. NEW FACULTY SPOTLIGHT:  JOËLLE RABU, MUSICAL THEATRE

For nearly three decades, Joëlle has toured five continents to rave reviews and standing ovations for both her concert, original songs, and her stage play "Tonight Piaf." A two time Jessie Award winner, Juno nominee and Touring Artist of the Year recipient, Joelle has performed in many other theatrical productions (including Anything Goes, Marion Bridge, Irma la Douce, Cabaret, Hot Flashes, Murder on the Nile) and she has also sung with numerous symphony orchestras across Canada and the U.S.

Joëlle's background of travel and culture is the source of a varied spectrum of expression, joie de vivre, and pure love of entertainment. Whether performing in English or in French, Joëlle smashes linguistic barriers with her rich, intoxicating voice and emotional delivery. Joëlle’s music and style do not fall into any specific category; rather, she has been described as “Purely Canadian” (Vancouver Province), and this unique aspect of her performances describes the rich diversity of her homeland. As a performer, Joëlle Rabu embraces her audience with her welcoming stage presence, her honesty and her passionate voice.

FROM THE STUDIO OF CHRISTINE McMAHON

Brittany Hannah received First Class Honours in her grade 10 RCM Voice Exam, and Elizabeth Herman was awarded First Class with Distinction in her grade 9 Voice Exam in August of this year. Recently, Elizabeth Herman and fellow student Simon Tozer performed a scene from 'Phantom of the Opera' at the Gala Benefit of the Bailey Theatre, raising $3000 for the new emergency room at the Nanaimo Regional Hospital.

CHRISTMAS RECITALS, GATHERINGS, AND STUDENT APPEARANCES

Teresa Borek’s studio will be holding a Christmas piano recital on Saturday, December 8^th at 2:00 PM in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Departure Bay Road. Cindy Speelman’s flute and recorder students will also host a Christmas recital on Saturday, December 8^th at 2:00pm in the Conservatory’s Ensemble Room.

On Thursday, December 6^th, Anne Tanod’s studio is throwing a Suzuki Piano Party here at the Conservatory at 4:45pm.

Marilyn Rummel’s harp students will be performing in the lobby of the Cowichan Theatre on Sunday, December 9^th at 1:00pm as part of the Winter Harp concert, a touring ensemble show featuring some of Canada’s best harpists.

Finally, on Saturday, December 15^th the Nanaimo Youth Choir will present “The Colours of Christmas” with the Camerata Singers at St. Andrew’s United Church. Tickets are $12 and the concert will start at 7:00pm.
