CHORDIAL NOTES JANUARY 2011

The whole problem can be stated quite simply by asking, 'Is there a meaning to music?' My answer would be, 'Yes.' And 'Can you state in so many words what the meaning is?' My answer to that would be, 'No.' ~ Aaron Copland

CONTEST #2 – LISZTOMANIA!!
Last month we asked: What was the name of the Princess that Franz Liszt almost married? The answer? Princess Carolyne zu Sayn-Wittgenstein. Thank you to all who entered. Now we have another question for you…

Lisztomania – Franz Liszt was an incredibly popular performer in his time, some have compared him to the Beatles! In fact, women fought over Liszt’s handkerchiefs and gloves, which they ripped to shreds as souvenirs. Helping fuel this atmosphere was the artist's mesmeric personality and stage presence. Many later testified that Liszt's playing raised the mood of audiences to a level of mystical ecstasy!

Where and when was the term “Lisztomania” first coined?

Email the correct answer to ncmusic@island.net by January 21 at noon and you will be entered to win 4 tickets to the André Laplante Solo Piano Concert. Draw will be at 1PM on the 21st.

MASTER CLASS WITH ANDRE LAPLANTE – Feb 8 10AM
